Do you need climate controlled storage?

Climate controlled storage?

If you are looking for extra storage should you consider climate controlled storage?

What are the differences between non-climate controlled storage (standard units) and climate controlled storage units?

  • Climate controlled units are more expensive than standard storage units.
  • Climate controlled units are typically located indoors.  As a result, they are not affected by the effects of rain, snow, dirt and dust, pests or changes in temperatures or humidity.
  • Climate controlled units protect your items from mold and mildew.
  • Climate controlled units offer protection from flooding and water exposure from humidity, rain, and melted snow.
  • Climate controlled units tend to be cleaner.  Less dust and dirt gets into the interior units compared to standard units.
  • If you live where temperatures vary a lot season to season, you should consider investing in this type of units.  Climate controlled units should keep items in a constant environment.  They do not fall below freezing in winter or above 90 degrees in summer.  Temperatures can range between 55 or 60 degrees F and 85 or 90 degrees F.  Check with your local self-storage company for exact specifications for their units.
  • They typically use indirect heating and cooling systems to maintain air temperature.  In addition to controlling temperature most (not all) also control humidity.

When should you consider climate controlled self-storage units?  If you are storing:

  • Items that are valuable or one of a kind
  • Wood furniture that can crack or warp
  • Leather furniture
  • Books or important paper documents
  • Antiques or family heirlooms
  • Musical instruments that can be damaged by changes in temperatures or humidity
  • Paintings or photographs
  • Clothing such as fur or leather

If you need climate controlled storage, check with your local Volunteer Storage location.
